Postural Analysis

pbcpostureideal.gifYour posture is the position each of your bones and muscles take in whatever position you are in, be it sitting, standing or walking. Poor posture is in many cases the cause of all chronic muscular pain in the body.

Professionals have split posture into four types. These four are….

Lordodic – Kyphotic – Flat Backed – Sway Backed.

The image to the left shows what would be classed as ideal standing posture, where if a plumb line was held at the crown of the head it would fall straight to the base mid line of the foot, with the hips, knees and shoulders in line.

In reality many of us have postural imbalances caused by many things, overusing/overworking muscles, working, carrying children, sitting for long periods of time…. The list could go on and on. When one muscle is pulled tighter by over use the opposing muscle lengthens out and becomes weak and unstable.

With the use of Pilates principles and exercise the body can be realigned to bring balance back to misaligned muscles, resulting in improved posture and with that the added bonus of a decrease in aches and pains which may have niggled for years as a result of poor posture. Be it back, shoulders, knees, hips……..
